Earlier this year, we invited artist and printmaker Andy Lovell to come and stay with us at our beach huts to give him an opportunity to make preparatory sketches for his exhibition with us in 2022.

Andy was drawn to the dramatic coastline of Howick and the Grey’s family Bathing House, an early nineteenth century house that sits on a cliff edge with a secluded sandy cove below. It’s a favourite spot for many locals and visitors. In this new print, Andy has captured the rugged charm of this dwelling in it’s most intense and beautiful setting.

Andy’s work as an illustrator and printmaker is informed by making drawings and paintings from life which are then subsequently revisited through the medium of print. The original drawings are not an end in themselves but rather aim to catch the essence of a place in a form that can be translated to print back in the studio. He is drawn to the immediacy that the screen-print and monotype processes both allow and encourage and which result in a gestural and often graphic interpretation of these initial sketches and paintings done on location that capture a real sense of mood and place.
