Not far down the Coquet Valley from Hepple is Lordenshaws, the site of an Iron Age hillfort nestled in a great cluster of Neolithic rock art. There have been many interpretations of the circles, dots and lines of these deeply carved markings, but perhaps what continues to make them so fascinating is that we don’t really know what they represented. Their abstract forms remain artistically alluring and we find our own meanings in them. As such, they remain powerful notations in the landscape to which people have – and will – return to, again and again.
