Mariners Familiar Cunning Folk Poster

£30.00

The publishing revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries made woodcuts the primary visual language of the common people, quickly spreading information through cheap broadsides and pamphlets. This coincided with the European witch craze, a period of moral panic fueled by texts like the Malleus Maleficarum. Woodcuts became essential for popularizing the image of the witch, pamphlets like Newes from Scotland sensationalized witch trials, turning local fears into widespread narratives that profoundly influenced public opinion and culture.

For the Cunning Folk Exhibition, we have worked with printmaker Stephen Fowler on the official poster

We have reinterpreted some of these original historical woodcuts into prints for our next exhibition, remixing the public domain illustrations that originally served as visual propaganda for the witch hunts.
