Mining Memories
2021 Painted collage, acrylic paint and newspaper
Orientation: Landscape
Unframed: 21 x 29.7cm
Framed: 39 x 46 cm
These collages are part of a larger series originally commissioned by Guillemot Press to illustrate ‘Sea Change’ – a collection of poetry by Katrina Porteous and Phoebe Power about the Durham Coast. The collages explore the entangled coastal stratigraphies, where material reminders of coal mining are knitted into the cliffs and beaches. The use of newspaper in the collages is a nod to the social memories and local voices that continue to echo on the coastline, long after the mines have closed.
