The River Aln
£60.00
Running just behind the gallery, the River Aln is a constant presence for us. It’s the daily dog walk and our kids were brought up playing by it. We watch it every day running into the North Sea.
It’s been such a part of our daily life here I thought we would try to visually capture that spirit, this drawing is the start of a new print series we’re doing at the gallery – we’ve taken the visual reference from the Eve of Autun, a 12th-century Romanesque stone carving by the sculptor Gislebertus. I love this sculpture and her serpent body shape reminds of the flow of the river itself.
The name Aln is really old, pre Roman. it comes from the ancient Brittonic Alauna, rooted in the idea of “The Nourisher” a Celtic river goddess understood as a living, life-giving force long before the Romans recorded it here in the 2nd century.
