Twice each day the tide sweeps in from the North Sea and covers the road. Tide times and heights can be accurately predicted from the phases of the Moon.

Lindisfarne with the rising tide symbolically separating the island from the mainland, allowing for a period of solitude and deep contemplation, particularly linked to the story of Saint Cuthbert who is said to have sought seclusion on the island during high tide to deepen his spiritual practice; this is why the tide is often seen as a way to control access to the sacred space
